RESTORED MID-CENTURY BEACH HOUSE
You don’t see many of these anymore! Mid-century beach houses – simple and open in design – plenty of room around the table, plenty of beds, a deck and garden – space for everyone. They are quintessentially Australian, but they are now rare.
The classically retro house comprises 4 bedrooms, a main bathroom, open plan kitchen/dining/living area, and a separate sunroom/rumpus room. The house was built by a Russian family in the late 1960s and 1970s precisely as a place for their extended family to gather and party. By the 2010s when the family decided to sell many years of furniture, mementos, layers of dust, paint, carpet and curtains obscured the original layout and features.
But the essential bones of a mid-century beach house were there – soundly built, sloping ceilings, timber floors (buried beneath three layers of carpet!), big windows and a very large kitchen living room – perfect for gatherings – and a large yard,
The archaeologist knew she could excavate this buried treasure and the artist recognised its aesthetic potential. ‘We wanted to restore not renovate, to retain the functionality and essence of mid-century architecture while creating a sustainable comfortable home’.
Now the asbestos cladding has been replaced, giving an opportunity to fully insulate the house while retaining the original internal Masonite panels. The original aluminium windows have been replaced with modern double glazing. The beautiful hardwood floor is on show, and an extra deck has been added for sunset drinks. The studio is nestled in the native garden that surrounds the house.
